Born in Mexico, Catherine "Cat" Ferguson comes from a family of painters and has painted for a living all her life.
Ms Ferguson was called to her life work by a picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which she saw as a child in her grandmother's house. Captivated by the Guadalupe's aura, she decided her life should be illumined and burning, like those fiery rays. When she moved to Santa Fe in 1972, she encountered the New Mexican tradition of painting santos on wood, or "retablos." It was a natural medium for her and she has been making retablos ever since. She employs her own distinct style, but uses traditional historic sources for each saint's attributes. She adds her own personal world of landscape, animals, plants and humor.
Catherine also paints watercolors-mostly landscapes and oils-landscapes, figures and dreams. She lives in the lovely village of Galisteo, New Mexico.
Her work has been shown primarily in Santa Fe at Ernesto Mayan's Gallery, P/'o ae Pi Cultural Center, Arte Primitivo, the Museum of New Mexico Gift Shop, Montez Gallery and Hansel Gallery. It has graced book covers and been reproduced and written about in magazines and newspapers. In 1995, the press of the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe published a limited edition portfolio titled "New World Saints," with text by a local scholar and illustrated with Catherine's art.
Catherine is also an accomplished and published poet. Additional information about her poetry is available on the site Santa Fe Broadside: http://www.sfpoetry.org/ferguson5.html#2
